I am thinking about buying a 1040ste because I like the music software.  (I do
sequencing of electronic music and have sold two albums so far.) I'd like to
get people's opinions on the Atari as a music machine and opinions on the music
and other software for it.  My general question is: does the Atari software in
most fields match that of IBM &/or Mac?
Also, I have the possibility of buying the STe with a laser printer. Do Atari
laser printers work ONLY with Atari machines? Are they really good?
Your comments on what's what in the Atari world will be warmly welcomed and
carefully read. Thankyou in advance.

I've been using ATSpeed for almost a year now, and I like it
very much!  I'm running Window3.0 and various other programs,
and in general everything seems to be working out.  I do have
problems, though, e.g. I have yet to find a hard disk cache
that works (I've tried Smartdrive[comes with Windows],
Hyperdrive[a shareware program], and PC-cache[which comes with
PC-Tools Deluxe (v.6)])...Also, I still haven't figured out
how to reload the system font with speedfnt after I've
switched to another font.  All in all, however, I'm happy I
got it when I did...it has done a lot for me.

The reason I'm posting this here is that I don't really have
much support.  I bought the unit from Talon Technologies, and
while they seemed very professional, polite, etc on the phone,
they were not able to answer all my questions nor do they seem
to respond to written questions.  In a nutshell, I don't feel
I have the type of support for my msdos emulator that I dofor
Spectre...This is partly due to the fact that the maker of
ATSpeed is in Europe, which does not lend itself very well to
phone calls or snail mail (and of course, Gadgets is great
with their support), and partly due to the fact that there are
a lot fewer people using ATSpeed here in the US than there are
people using Spectre.  So, I was hoping to find people who use
ATSpeed, so we could share experiences and maybe help each
other out in this way.  If you are an ATSpeed user and would
be interested in getting a list of other users who have access
to the net, let me know and I'll try to put together such a
list and distribute it to those who want it...I know I'd be
interested, so that maybe I'd find out about a cache that
works, and I'd be happy to let others know about things I've
been able to do (or not).

Now can anyone tell me just who these guys are that wrote things like
the WHATTHEHECK and Life's a bitch demos?  The demos are pretty neat
but I'm concerned about references to 'ripping' sounds from commercial
games and 'copy parties' in their 'scroll texts'.  Are these demos nothing
more than cut and paste jobs of stolen code and artwork?

There aren't yet any docs for the ST library, however, most of the functions
are from either ANSI C or UNIX, and so a good book on one or both should tell
you what you need to know. Incidentally, if you not already using it, it's a
good idea to go for Eric Smith's MiNT library (even if you don't have MiNT) as
it means that your programs will almost certainly behave when used by those of
us who do use MiNT.

Unfortunately (for you, anyhow), the GNU project's standard text formatter is
TeX, so you're kind of stumped there! (Perhaps someone could post the info
files built from the docs so that we don't all have to make them?)

I noticed the sources and diffs for the ST version of GCC1.40 in the
new gnustuff directory at A.A. (Thanks to Graham for the neat re-org!!)

Before I go to the trouble to try and compile it, has someone else already
got the ST version of GCC1.40 compiled up, and could they please post it
to A.A??

Thanks to all, and again, public thanks to Graham Higgins for his work in
getting the gnu directories on A.A in such nice shape!

You will have almost the same amount of free memory with a hard drive as
without. The driver only takes up a few bytes. If you could run Word
Perfect and Timeworks DTP before (which I suspect you could) you can
still run them with a hard drive, only MUCH, MUCH faster.

I don't think Atari is making much of a splash over here (yet?)
with the new STEs and TTs, but can any of you guys over in Europe
say how the new machines are being received there?  Is Atari
maintaining the significant market share that it once had?

I am not from Europe, but I just spent 3 weeks there and I can tell you an
American's perspective of the European ST market:

If any of you thought the west coast was Atari-country (flashback...Atari's
first ad campaign under the Trammiels) then you have obviously not been to
Germany.  I looked at one of the 3 Atari magazines at the newsstand in the
train station of the former East Berlin and they advertised the Mega STE, the
Notepad (handwriting ST), CD ROM players, and many other Atari products that
we will probably never see in the States.  Walking down the street in West
Berlin showed that Atari was in most computer stores, and I passed at least
one store with a huge neon Atari symbol in the window.

In Denmark, I talked to a CS student there who told me that the ST was a very
popular choice there in Denmark.  I also saw Atari's in computer stores there.

Then, to top it all, I was watching a soccer game televised from Germany, and
there by one goal where the cameras got good shots of it was a huge "Atari
Computers" sign familiar to all of us. (Logo and all!)

In short, Atari is doing very well in Europe, as far as I could tell.
(The only Mac store I saw in my 3 week stay was in Copenhagen!)

Minix-ST with a 4Mb system is quite adequate for the kind of thing
you're mentioning. Most GNU stuff [gcc, emacs, bash...] runs nicely
in this environment.

If this is the DMA noise problem you're mentioning, some of you may remember I
had this problem a while back.  Thanks again to all those who spotted the
problem :-).  FYI, ICD are now shipping boards with the capacitor fix built-in.
I finally have a properly-working HD!  I also have a number of spare DMA cables!

I just purchased a copy of Lattice C (v. 3.03.02 (c) 1986 . . . hey, for $20
CAN used, I can't complain :-)), and I have a few questions (my apologies if
all of these questions were answered recently on the net) :

1) What are the major differences (improvements) to the compiler in its latest
version (v. 5.01?)?

2) Is Metacomo still in business? If not, who is carrying the line?

3) Is an upgrade path available, and is it worth it? (at the moment, I'm just
writing small, uncomplicated programs for use on a UNIX platform. Since I can't
always get through to the system via modem, why not use the ST?)

E-mail would be preferred, unless you feel it would be more appropriate to
post.

The problem would be if one process changed the characters to Eric but another
wanted them as Bob. Can Mint cope with such a scenario? Would the character
definitions be stored with the context of each process?

When I asked this question
the higher frequency will burn out the coils...Needless to say I didn't
try this.

Don't do it, as you can't do Zmodem transfers with Xon/Xoff, you must
do RTS/CTS flow control.
Note: There are Fix programs for the RTS/CTS Problem..
